We observe that while our students are successful they are not necessarily actively engaged as powerful learners. We found this through a series of observations, discussions and interviews with learners, teachers and leadership.

Evidence showed us that while our learners were motivated and keen, many were passive. Achievement data also indicated a direct link between tamariki who are passive learners and areas of under achievement, namely writing.

This has indicated that while we are doing many wonderful things we need to do something differently. Our hunch is that assessment for learning and improving our practice as teachers will enable our students to become more active learners.

We have started on an Assess to Learn PD cycle.

My inquiry will be focusing on our year 7&8 mainstream learners.
